Abstract: In previous research, it was found that there is a significant association between inauthentic adolescent relationships, measured by the variation from an idealized relationship and a realistic one, and depression, specifically on young girls. The present study looks to find what specific factors of these adolescent relationships may have an effect on depression. Some factors being examined are whether or not the individual had sexual intercourse, in addition to gender. After the study was complete, it was determined there was a significant association between adolescent relationships and depressions, however when controlled for sexual intercourse the relationship was no longer significant, suggesting that sexual intercourse is a confounding variable. Lastly, when examining the differences in gender, it was found that adolescent girls were approximately 20% more likely to experience depression symptoms then adolescent boys.
