Abstract: In recent psychological studies of education, one of the most common procedures performed has been the measure of an individual’s self esteem. However, different researchers tend to use the term self esteem differently, describing multiple distinct (though related) concepts: for example, the term has been used both to describe an individual’s general perception of themselves and to describe an individual’s perception of their own academic intelligence. This project examines Wave 1 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, investigating the relationship between general self esteem and self perceived intelligence among adolescents. The findings of the study suggest that higher self perceived intelligence appears to be associated with higher general self esteem for students, emphasizing the importance of cultivating high self perceived intelligence within public and private schooling.
