Abstract: The type of media you consume is influenced by and helps define your cultural and political outlook. As the digital era has transformed the media landscape, legacy media fights for relevance. Some accuse mainstream news media of relying on fear mongering for clicks and views, while others see them as bastions of journalism in an age of misinformation. As confidence in our government has been shaken by questions of election fraud and the COVID-19 pandemic, it is worth wondering whether legacy media encourages or stymies skepticism of the government. My project examines the effects of legacy media consumption (watching television and reading newspapers) on an individual’s confidence in the different branches of the federal government.
