Abstract: Social phobia and dependence on alcohol are problems that plague people of all ages, races, and genders. Although it’s known that having another medical or mental issue puts one at higher risk of social phobia, and that people with social phobia may be more vulnerable to frequent consumptions of alcohol, there is little research on the direct association between alcohol dependency and social phobia, and how this association is affected by age. Using data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, this study looked at the association between social phobia level and alcohol dependency, and how this association differed based on one’s age. The results showed that people with high levels of social phobia had a higher risk of being alcohol dependence, and that age did not affect this relationship. This research is important in understanding how alcohol dependency can be prevented, and how mental illness effects other aspects of mental health such as addiction.
