Abstract: Children who’s parents struggle with alcohol abuse are more likely to struggle with mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety (Pitts et al., 1999). Therefore it is vital to determine the association between parental alcohol abuse and mental health disorders in their children. This study uses the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), which focuses on adolescents who are 18 years old or older and are non-institutionalized US civilians. The relationship between the two main variables, parental alcoholism and child mental health disorders, is significant in the analysis. After controlling for the suicidal thoughts of children, the relationship was still found to be significant.
