Abstract:
Background: Evidence suggests that some personality disorders are associated with increased levels of alcohol use disorders and overrepresentation among violent offenders (Hasin et al., 2007); (Howard, 2006). Furthermore, alcohol abuse is also associated with aggression and violence (Garofalo and Wright, 2017).
Methods: Chi-square analysis and logistic regression were run to analyze the relationship between the number of diagnosed personality disorders respondents had and whether they also displayed disordered alcohol behaviors. Multivariate logistic regression was done to assess whether alcohol abuse then mediated the relationship between number of personality disorders and disordered alcohol behaviors.
Results: Bivariate analysis showed a significant, positive relationship between multiple personality disorders and co-occurring disordered alcohol behaviors. Multivariate logistic regression also indicated that alcohol abuse mediated the relationship between number of personality disorders and respondents displaying intentional acts of aggression.
Discussion: Preliminary results support the hypothesis that individual with diagnosed personality disorders are more likely to display disordered alcohol behaviors which, consequently, puts them at higher risk for aggressive behaviors. The implication of these results suggest that targeting these individuals with pre-emptive alcohol awareness treatment may help inhibit future alcohol dependence and/or acts of aggression.
